SGHP Reactor Temperature Sensing Refurbishment
CATEGORY: SGHP Reactor Temperature Sensing Refurbishment
PRODUCTS:Platinum Rhodium TC’s c/w Ceramic Protection Tube
DATE:June 2023
Background
We recently embarked on a project with a leading Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) complex, renowned for its large-scale and advanced operations. The customer, having previously worked with Thermo Electric Instrumentation, came to us with a critical task—refurbishing their SGHP Reactor temperature sensor assemblies.
SOLUTION
At the heart of our solution was the Type B Platinum Rhodium Thermocouple, designed for high accuracy and reliability in extreme temperatures. This thermocouple was enhanced with two main protective components:
- Ceramic Outer Thermowell: This high-grade ceramic material served as the first line of defence against the reactor’s harsh conditions, offering resistance to thermal shock and chemical corrosion. Its robust construction ensured that the sensor could withstand extreme temperatures and aggressive process conditions.
- Protection Tube: Positioned within the ceramic thermowell, this tube provides internal protection against contamination of the thermocouples. Its high purity and chemical inertness made it an ideal barrier against contaminants, ensuring the thermocouple’s accuracy and longevity.
A unique aspect of this project was the innovative recycling of thermowell flanges and temperature assembly enclosures using bead blasting. This process involved bead blasting to remove old coatings and prepare the components for the next stage.
Customised Services
Our customer-centric approach to this project was highlighted by our customised services that catered to the customer’s specific needs. This included efficient procurement processes, competitive pricing, prompt delivery, and swift response times. Our ability to understand and address their unique requirements played an important role in the success of this project.
ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE
A major aspect of this project was the refurbishment of the temperature sensor assemblies. Our engineering team's proposal to refurbish the thermowell with original materials was instrumental in ensuring the sensor's capability to withstand hazardous environments and high temperatures.
RESULTS
The project resulted in a significant achievement for both Thermo Electric Instrumentation and the customer. The renewed temperature sensors will offer extended lifespans and robust performance in extreme conditions. The recycling approach reflected our commitment to sustainability, setting a precedent for environmental responsibility in industrial processes.
This recycling initiative is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. By reusing existing components, we significantly reduced waste and minimised the environmental footprint of the project. The bead blasting technique proved to be an efficient and eco-friendly method of refurbishing old parts, aligning with our goals of promoting sustainable industrial practices.
Overall, this project has set a new standard in the industry for temperature sensor design and sustainability. It demonstrates how innovative engineering solutions can be harmonised with environmental responsibilities.
The project is a landmark achievement for Thermo Electric Instrumentation, demonstrating our dedication to delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions tailored to meet the specific needs of our customers. This project not only reinforces our position as a valuable partner in the field of temperature measurement but also underscores our commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and environmental sustainability.
