Background
A prominent oil & gas company in Qatar faced a challenge related to temperature control in a salt-water application. They required a reliable solution to precisely measure and control the temperature of salt water used in cooling applications to ensure it was consistent with the temperature of the cooling water, mitigating the differences in temperature between the two. The specific application involved the use of temperature sensors to measure salt water, which was directly linked to cooling water. The primary challenge was to achieve consistent temperature readings between the two types of water, ensuring a seamless and efficient cooling process. The maintenance department sought a robust solution that would stand up to the corrosive nature of salt water while delivering precise and consistent readings.
SOLUTION
Thermo Electric Instrumentation was chosen for the task due to our established reputation for reliability and the strong relationship we had built with the client. We were commissioned to design and manufacture unique industrial RTD assemblies tailored for salt-water applications. This was the first application of its type, marking us as pioneers in supplying this type of temperature sensor for these specific process requirements.
Customised Services
As this project was unique, there were some engineering hurdles that had arisen along the way, one in particular related to damping. Our team responded quickly to this issue, and we suggested including a counterweight in the design. This also included two additional wires to mitigate the effects of waves and flows of the seawater, ensuring stable and accurate temperature readings.
COLLABORATION
The chosen solution was the culmination of collaborative efforts between the customer and our engineering and design team, along with our account managers, who collaborated seamlessly with the customer. Special emphasis was put on selecting the right construction and materials that would not only provide accurate temperature measurement but also withstand the corrosive effects of salt water.
